Aviation needs a step-change in propulsion performance to meet decarbonisation goals. Our team is advancing that step-change through SUPERCOIL, focused on high-performance superconducting motor coil technology for future clean aircraft.

We are now inviting new partners to join us in shaping a strong, collaborative response to the Clean Aviation Call for Interest. The Fast Track Activities (FTA-05) Cryo-cooled power electronics for a fully electric hydrogen fuel cell powered aircraft , with Euro 5M funding is key.

Why Superconducting Motor Coils?

Superconducting coils can enable electric propulsion systems with significantly higher power density and efficiency than conventional solutions—critical for hybrid-electric and future all-electric aircraft concepts.

Potential benefits include:

  • Lower electrical losses
  • Higher specific power
  • Reduced propulsion system mass
  • Improved aircraft-level energy performance
  • Better pathway to scalable megawatt-class propulsion

Our Current Position

Within SUPERCOIL, we are developing and integrating superconducting coil capabilities for aviation-relevant applications.

As communicated with ATI, coil characterisation funding is structured through complementary routes: MgB2 development is technically included in SUPERCOIL, and funded via a parallel pathway involving the Aerospace Technology Institute (ATI) and New Zealand's Ara Ake programme [1].

This model supports technical alignment while strengthening international collaboration and delivery capacity.

We Are Looking for Additional Partners

We welcome interest from organizations that can contribute to:

  • Superconducting material development (including HTS and MgB2 pathways)
  • Coil design, winding, insulation, and manufacturing scale-up
  • Cryogenic cooling and thermal management
  • Electromagnetic, structural, and multiphysics simulation
  • Power electronics and motor-drive integration
  • Testing, validation, reliability, and certification planning
  • Industrialisation, supply chain readiness, and cost modelling

Why Join Us

By joining this effort, partners can:

  • Help define the technical roadmap for superconducting propulsion in aviation
  • Participate in high-impact collaborative development under Clean Aviation
  • Access cross-border innovation links between Europe and New Zealand
  • Position for future demonstrator and industrial deployment phases
